New headers: which should I choose?
Well, when you say, you alsways get either too much or too little... I'm in a serious creative rush (?!) and have started manipolating images left and right to make a new custom header. Let me say that Online Image Editor is a real help in this sense. You only have to upload an image, and with a few clicks you can create your own banner/header/icon/button. A real gift to those, like me, who wouldn't know how to use Photoshop if their life depended on it. This is proof that anyone can make graphics, when given the right tools :-)
So, while I was at it, I completed a few neaders, but now I have the opposite problem: which one should I choose? Have a look and give me your opinion...
(If you're using Firefox - like me- you can see the headers in their original size by left-clicking on them, or right-clicking and opening in a new tab/window, as you prefer.)
"Lighthouse" picture on the background, black title and description.
White/pearl grey background, navy blue title and descriptions, a few images of the things I like the most.
Pale blue "wooden" background; black title and description, a few pictures of the things I like the most.
Bright blue "vortex" background. This is a bit different, as it has a rounded border and another description. I don't know which style is better - simple and clean, without pictures, or a bit "fuller", with the pictures. Mah.At the moment, my favourite the blue "wooden" header, but also the "lighthouse" has its strong appeal. The "wooden" header is very colourful, while the "lighthouse" is more towards the pale blue-gray-white-black colours, and I almost think it adapts more to the rest of the layout. A good compromise could maybe be the "vortex" header. I don't know.
Which do you prefer? Please tell me what you think.
P.S. I actually added another. Yeah, I'm crazy. See this one, too (beautiful background image):

I like the wooden one and the lighthouse one. There's something about the cursive font on the others that I'm not a big fan of.
Thank you, Kim! So you don't like the cursive fonts... uhm... pity because I love them... you know, all this header making almost was a big excuse so that I could try out fancy cursive fonts :P
I like the wooden one the best. I think it has the cleanest look, and it's bright and cheery. I have to agree with Kim about the cursive fonts. They're pretty, but to me they just don't pop as much in a blog header.
Thanks for the suggestion, Alyce!
I really love the lighthouse one, but then I also quite enjoy the last one you added under the PS. In general, the whole cursive writing thing isn't working for me, but in that last one, it definitely fits!
Ciao Alessandra,
Couple of thoughts you may find useful. Or maybe not.
If I had to chose from the headers "as is", I'd choose the lighthouse. Still, there's a room for improvement: the details to the right and to the left (what are they? some wires?) really distract.
I like the wooden background but totally dislike the idea of putting small photos on it. Here, less is more: if you have just wooden background ("simple and clean, without pictures"), you give more space to imagination. I'd like to think it is a wooden pier on a lake where one can lay down and spend a few hours with a good book. Or maybe it is a wall of the summer cottage somewhere in the woods. For somebody else it is something else.
In general, cursive writing is difficult to read. Especially the long words. I think it is OK just to write "Out of the blue" in cursive. Even better if it were your own handwriting, that would make it unique (your trademark, if you wish). But to add "book reviews" is too much. I would drop "book reviews" altogether, cursive or not. Again, that would leave more space for fantasy.
All the best,
Kirill
P.S. Great blog. I am glad you are back. Keep up the good work!
Hi all,
thanks for your insights, especially to Kirill for the detailed analysis. You are right, the wires things are distracting, but I don't know how to take them off - except for maybe cropping the picture differently.
At the moment I like the lighthouse header more than anything. I don't know why the lighthouse, since it doesn't seem to have much to do with books, but who cares :)
The wooden one for sure. BTW, love your blog!
